DREAM PROJECT

The most important and necessary program that is in the offing is to undertaken the building expansion plan of AIAWA. After a period of more than 7 years of continuous persuasion, the Municipal Corporation finally approved AIAWA’s plans to create a new hospital and shelter premises. This major project has to be implemented without any delay. Only by creating more kennels, the number of sterilizations can go up and only then the animal birth control scheme can succeed. Also on the other hand, AIAWA needs to create all other facilities in the interest of animal welfare. The planning of a new premise is already completed and the fund raising drive will soon be underway. The hitch is that after approving the plan in Nov 2004, the Corporation has not entered into an Agreement with AIAWA (In fact the Corporation has not made any Agreement with AIAWA since the seventies when AIAWA began their early activity of sheltering dog and cats).
A short scheme of the expansion plan is presented here.

RE-DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR AN ANIMAL HEALTH CARE CENTRE & AN APPEAL TO ALL

The basic tenets of animal welfare is to keep in mind the needs of animals so that they remain healthy in all aspects. An ANIMAL HEALTH CARE CENTRE can provide such an environment. The primary concern has to be proper orientation, air and light and above all landscaping. Animals like humans need a congenial atmosphere for faster recovery.

The re-development is to be carried out in two stages, with a view to increase the number of kennels for dogs and cats also to include large animals and birds on the premises. This is proposed by putting up 4 inter-connecting blocks, which will contain kennels with necessary facilities. A 5th block will be the isolation ward to house suspected rabies cases and include post mortality facility. Each block will be ground plus 4 storeys except the 5th block, which would at ground level.

Kennel design: The dog kennels would be housed on the ground floor of 4 blocks. It is proposed to put up pre-fabricated metal cages in them to avoid tick infestation. Kennels would be partially enclosed and partially open to sky. Such kennels can be easily and effectively maintained and would incur less recurring cost. Natural light and ventilation would help to keep the air free of odor. In short these kennels will be animal friendly.

The cat ward is proposed on the first floor of the 1st block The basic facilities such as  examination rooms, preparation rooms and operation theatres, ICU room, x-ray room, stores, ward boys’ room, toilets, kitchen will also be on the first floor. The second floor would have facility such as a library, pathology, blood bank and other ancillary facilities will be constructed on the second floor. An aviary is also proposed in the space between each block, which would be enclosed with wire-mesh. If more space is allotted at a later date, AIAWA has proposed to put up sheds and medical for large animals like cows, horses and sheep.  This is already reflected on the master plan.

LANDSCAPING: Cleanliness and hygiene form an important aspect of any hospital compound. The surrounding area being very congested and highly polluted, it is proposed to undertake a tree plantation program, which will help in making the area appear green and pollution free. Neem and fragrant flower trees will purify the air and increase oxygen levels thereby reducing need of artificial methods of pest control. Water store-age tanks will be put up.

The entire construction will be put up in a phased manner, beginning with the first block on the shelter plot. Block-wise construction will not disturb the on-going activities. Funds to be raised will be block-wise too so that it facilitates AIAWA in setting a low target of collection.

A separate fund namely “AIAWA BLDG FUND” is already maintained to ensure that the money towards the construction is used for the specific purposed only. An appeal is made to all of you to contribute generously and help us to create the health care center.

Healthy animals ensure a healthy society. We all must remember that we are greatly dependent on animals, be it for food, transport or scientific study. Animal welfare is therefore an essential community service and no less than any other welfare activity.  We cannot save the environment if we negate animal welfare. They are a part and parcel of the larger whole, which bounds the flora, fauna and man together. None of us can survive and flourish in isolation.
